Ruby 03/25/2008
We had to help Ruby cross the Rainbow Bridge this morning. When we picked up Ruby from Hillsborough County Animal Services on March 15th she had been spayed and had a mammary tumor removed. After just a few days of being fostered by Laura her incisions opened, became swollen and discolored. We took her to Dr. Corona on March 18th and he kept her for a few days treating her wounds and we were optimistic because the swelling was going down and the infection appeared to be clearing up. The results of the pathology on the tumor showed it was cancerous and that it could be expected to matasitize (spread), if it had not already done so. When Ruby returned to Dr. Corona for her scheduled recheck today he knew she was in trouble because the wound was not healing at all. After further examination Dr. Corona believed that there were additional tumors in same mammary and additional tumors in another. This coupled with the wound getting worse rather then better led to the conclusion that further efforts and treatment were futile and would only delay the inevitable. Furthermore, Ruby was becoming more uncomfortable and more in pain as time went on. Cindy Mac took Ruby home last night and kept her as comfortable as possible. I took Ruby to Dr. Corona's this morning and held and petted her as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge free of pain and suffering no more. Dr. Corona and his staff gave Ruby every possible chance to show any sign for a possible recovery but it was already too late for her. If you were with me this morning and could see her for yourself you could not have any doubt she had lost her battle with the cancer. I took Ruby to our friends at Honor Thy Pet and her ashes will be returned to me later in the week so she can join Bisquit, Buddy VIII and Ivan at our home. Jack
